Transport & Warehouse Manager

Location: Huddersfield (HD3)
Salary: £50,000 per annum
Hours: 06:00–14:00, Monday to Friday 

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Transport and Warehouse Manager to take responsibility for the warehouse operations and transport fleet. This is a key leadership role, overseeing the safe, efficient and legally compliant movement of goods while ensuring effective stock control, warehouse operations and customer service across multiple sites.

Overview

A well-established and highly respected manufacturing company based in Huddersfield, is seeking an experienced Transport and Warehouse Manager. The business has a number of customers from large plc to small family businesses. 

Our client runs its own fleet of HGV and LGV as well as a number of vans. 

The successful candidate will be expected to manage and lead a team of well-established individuals within a busy working environment.

Purpose of the role

The Warehouse & Transport Manager holds overall responsibility for the safe, organised and legally compliant running of the warehouse function and the company's transport fleet. 

 

Key responsibilities

Transport and fleet compliance

  • Hold operational responsibility for the company's fleet of tractor units and trailers, ensuring full compliance with all legal obligations of running an HGV fleet under the operator's licence.
  • Ensure vehicles are inspected, serviced and maintained on schedule, with accurate and complete service and maintenance records.
  • Ensure tachograph cards (vehicle and driver) are downloaded, stored and analysed within the required timescales, and that drivers' hours rules are observed.
  • Ensure fork-lift trucks (FLTs) and all materials-handling equipment are compliant, inspected and maintained (LOLER/PUWER).
  • Ensure all drivers' and operators' training, licences, qualifications (including CPC) and certifications are current, with training records kept up to date.
  • Plan and schedule vehicle movements, routes and staff shifts efficiently.

Warehouse and stock

  • Ensure the warehouse and holding sites are well organised, clean and operating efficiently across all locations.
  • Ensure stock is correctly and promptly booked in from the factory and from suppliers of factored products, and that storage is accurate and accessible.
  • Maintain stock integrity and accurate records, working with the relevant departments who place the orders.
  • Oversee goods-in (raw materials and factored products) and goods-out (customer despatch).

People

  • Lead, manage and develop the warehouse and transport team, including the two administrators.
  • Manage absence, performance, training and development in line with company policy.
  • Carry out and maintain risk assessments and safe systems of work, promoting a strong health and safety culture.

Communication

  • Maintain strong, professional communication with customers on goods-out matters, supporting delivery performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain strong communication with suppliers on goods-in, covering both raw materials and factored products.
  • Work closely with internal departments (purchasing, production, sales) to align stock and despatch with demand.

 

Person specification

Essential

  • Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) – National (Road Haulage).
  • Proven experience managing transport/fleet operations within a manufacturing, distribution or logistics environment.
  • Sound, current knowledge of HGV operator-licensing obligations, drivers' hours, tachograph and vehicle maintenance requirements.
  • Experience of warehouse and stock management.
  • Strong people-management skills and the ability to lead a team.
  • Good IT skills and confident communicator, written and verbal.

Desirable

  • FLT licence and/or FLT instructor/examiner qualification.
  • IOSH/NEBOSH or equivalent health and safety qualification.
  • Experience of factored/bought-in product handling alongside own manufacture.
