The Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Electrical Lead to provide technical leadership, hands-on expertise, and project oversight within our rail manufacturing environment. This role combines electrical design input, project management responsibility, and practical electrical work, including the repair and calibration of safety-critical equipment.
You will manage and mentor one electrical team member, while remaining actively involved in day-to-day electrical tasks and supporting project delivery from design through to completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical & Team Leadership:
Provide day-to-day supervision, mentoring, and technical guidance to one electrical engineer/technician, ensuring high standards of workmanship and compliance.
- Hands-On Electrical Work:
Take a proactive, hands-on role in the repair, testing, commissioning, and calibration of electrical and safety-critical rail equipment.
- Electrical & Track Design Support:
Contribute to and review electrical and system designs, with a strong understanding of track design interfaces, rail standards, and how electrical systems integrate within the wider rail infrastructure.
Manage and deliver minor electrical projects, including planning, scheduling, cost estimation, and progress reporting, ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
- Technical Authority & Compliance:
Act as the main point of contact for technical queries, ensuring compliance with BS 7671, CDM 2015, and relevant rail and manufacturing standards.
- Resource & Stock Management:
Order materials, manage stock levels, and coordinate maintenance activities to support manufacturing and project requirements.
- Documentation & Quality Control:
Review, update, and sign off electrical designs, test results, risk assessments, and technical documentation, ensuring accuracy and traceability.
Typical Work Activities
- Conducting site inspections, testing, and electrical risk assessments as required
- Repairing, fault-finding, and calibrating rail safety equipment
- Supporting and mentoring a team member
- Liaising with project managers, contractors, suppliers, and clients
- Resolving complex technical and operational issues in real time
Qualifications and experience:
HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or similar
Proven solid experience within electrical engineering, ideally within rail, manufacturing, or safety-critical environments, including some supervisory or project responsibility
Proven experience in electrical engineering or mechanical systems with a focus on system design and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Revit, MicroStation or SolidWorks is essential.
Experience with surface mount technology (SMT), soldering techniques, debugging electronic circuits, and signal processing is highly desirable.
Background in automation systems involving system schematics, schematic capture tools like CAD or Revit.
Ability to perform root cause analysis effectively using tools like MATLAB or Simulink.
SMSTS or SSSTS (desirable)
Strong knowledge of electrical systems including power distribution and control systems
Ability to read, interpret, and contribute to electrical and system designs, with awareness of track design requirements
Hands-on, detail-oriented, and safety-focused
Strong problem-solving, communication, and organisational skills
Comfortable balancing leadership, design input, and practical work
Proven experience in electrical engineering or mechanical systems with a focus on system design and troubleshooting.
